A few weeks ago we were at the marina of the Italian nautical club Circolo Canottieri Napoli, where the well-established local event of rigid inflatable boats took place. Many friends of the sea had the opportunity to see and try several ribs of various companies in the water.

A four-stroke 40hp Suzuki outboard engine which was hanging on the 6.2m 2- Bar’s transom was expected to attract our interest and curiosity, since it is a set-up not used to see.

The manufacturer's response to the question about the reason could anyone decide to equip this 6.2 m rigid inflatable boat with such a small horsepower engine was quite disarming:
«Up to 40 hp Driver's license is not required ,so many rental companies prefer the particular package, which is of great interest to both Italian and foreign visitors».

The name 2 Bar recalls the unit of tubes’ air pressure measurement and consists a new reality of the Italian shipbuilding industry: it is a company that was founded in 2016 and specializes in the design and production of pleasure boats.

Taking advantage of the collaborations with the largest companies in the field of engines, 2 Bar company wants to create boats suitable for everyone, with innovative, functional and at the same time unique and refined design, always maintaining high quality and attention to detail.

Each rib can be tailored to the needs of the customer so that he can experience the sea with complete freedom and safety.

The company started with the production of small tenders and then with the implementation of its two main models: the 2 Bar 62 and the 2 Bar 76.
For the time, we are in the process of producing two larger models, which we will be at the disposal for testing at the coming Genoa Boat Show, in September 2018.

On deck

2-Bar is a nice and stylish rib with simple and clean lines, very good construction quality, beautiful colour scheme and functional deck design on which comfortable living of the passengers is ensured quite cleverly.

The tubes are made of Hypalon / Neopren, consisting of 5 compartments and having 48 centimetres in diameter, which gradually increases to reach 56 centimetres in the stern area.

The console is sleek and centrally positioned, sized to create comfortable passageways right and left for uninterrupted passenger movement.

The dashboard is located just above the steering wheel and accommodates the analogue instruments of the engine while higher there is room for the installation of electronic devices.

Access to the interior of the console is able through the hatch underneath the steering wheel, while at the front there is a built-in seat which is lifted and reveals the corresponding storage space.

In front of the console there is a base for a very useful table, which lowered forms a very comfortable sunbed.

Below the bow sunbed, there is a large locker, which takes advantage of the entire depth of the hull, thus ensuring maximum capacity.

Immediately behind the console there is the three-seater sofa which also has the role of the rib’s helmseat.

Its backrest is adjustable and when it moves forward a huge sunbed is created leaving space for relaxation and sunbathing for the passengers.

Below the three-seater sofa there is the large locker of the stern where the battery and the bilge pump are located, and there is plenty of room for all our equipment.

The aft sundeck is surrounded by two wide polyester platforms that facilitate our access to the engine’s area and the swimming ladder.

At sea

Testing 2-Bar 62 with the 40hp Suzuki we can add that this package has two very great advantages.

First of all, the 6.2 meter rib offers great comfort and ability to live on its deck, i.e. a family can spend a very pleasant day making coastal cruises.

After all, since the rib with such a low horsepower can not develop high speeds while its accelerations are clearly limited, it becomes much less dangerous, in terms of causing accidents, in the hands of inexperienced people who decide to sit behind the console of a high speed boat for the first time.

With 50 litters of fuel and 3 crew members we opened to the waves of the bay of Naples in order to get a little feeling of the rib’s behaviour with the «enormous» horsepower.

The 40hp Suzuki engine got us on plane after 3500 rpm at a speed of 10-12 knots.
At 4000 rpm our speed was 16 knots while at 4500 rpm we were running with 19 knots.
At WOT, the engine reached 5000 rpm giving us a top speed of 23 knots.

Of course, we would at least be naive if we attempted any kind of assessment or criticism in terms of acceleration, speed or performance of the particular engine-boat combination.

However, we can say that it is a very smart combination that can travel very economically and very pleasantly with 20 knots, a speed ideal not only for tourism and touring, but also for one-day excursions in nearby destinations, while offering large areas of relaxation and sunbathing.
